Bracken Lorelli

A Waterlily of good form. The Autumn/Pink blended blooms are on slim strong stems.

Cameo

This Cream Waterlily was one of the first Waterlilies raised by Bill Tapley back in the late 70’s. The performance of this cultivar in our garden was just brilliant. It was good right through the heat this last season.

Figurine

The Shell Pink blooms are the yardstick of the Waterlilies. Figurine is still in my top five Dahlias to grow. A gem to grow when you get good stock.

Granite Anne

A welcome introduction from Malcolm Balch in Stanthorpe. The Apricot blooms are appealing to visitors as well as the Judge.

Ken's Gold

This intense Yellow is a proven performer over the years. Still being noticed by the Judge. Building Stock for 2016.

Lotus Joy

A very old Bright Pink Cultivar that performs extremely well in the heat. The form is not exactly what the exhibitor requires. As a breeder one would be interested because it was one of the parents of “Figurine”.

Pam Howden

International winner. The Autumn blooms are a treat & very reliable for the exhibitor.

Wakefield Samba

Waterlily. A vibrant Red with a bright Yellow base. Performed well in the Trial Garden. Stems are excellent. Did fade a little with temperatures over 45C.

Winkie Barney

Autumn Peach blooms with good cupped florets. The thin stems are very Dark & very strong. The blooms stood the summer heat well. Named after a good friends old faithful Dog "Barney".

Aegean Sky

Bright Purple with good white Collar. Stems are long & strong.

Darbro Marianne

A strong Maroon Red with stark white collar making it standout in the garden. If anything stems are almost too long making it ideal for the vase.

Formby Sunrise

The mid Red florets tipped with Yellow. The Yellow collar completes the picture.

Glenmarc Moonshine

The light Yellow rounded florets are pleasing to the eye. The collar is white and the stems are an asset.

Ken's Gala

One of the most reliable Collerette’s in circulation. The Purple Florets and White collar make this an attractive cultivar. Winner of many awards.

Miss Joan

Reddish Pink at the base of the florets paling to white. This one does fade in the heat.

Pinkie 'O'

The strong dark stems display the Lavender/White blooms well above the plant. The white collar just adds to the appeal. This one is popular with the Judges.

Summit

A handy cultivar for the exhibitor. The cerise & white blooms are reliable.

Woden Hope

Performed well this season gaining a Reserve Grand Champion at the Enfield Show along with two other section Champions.

Trial Garden Report 2014

A clear white including the collar. Form is very good and flat on good stems. Flowering was constant and was more affected by bees than weather, flowering still when dug at the end of the season.

Bracken Astra

The Red/Yellow orchid has won several prestigious awards such as Vase of the Show at the Victorian State Show in 2010.

Christie Shayla

Vase of the Show at the Victorian State Show in 2014. A proven performer.

Winkie Charon

Stems are good. The Yellow blooms are attractive in the garden.

Winkie Cupid

Lipstick Pink and White blooms are a highlight with visitors. The form is interesting. Stems are excellent. Like all other open centred Cultivars it attracts the bees.

Winkie Lewana

The White Blooms give continuous display all season. Stems are excellent.

Devon Quest

Strong Plant with Lavender/White blooms on a good stem. Flowers for most of the season.

Earle

Huge White blooms on a tall plant. Plant has to be well supported. Rick Burns gained Grand Champion at the Shepparton Show.

Evelyn Rumbold

This one was raised by the late Brose Baynes of Barmera in the 50’s. The strong Purple blooms are a standout but the blooms tend to be a little shallow. Disbudding early gives excellent stems.

Formby Sovereign

Plant is low but produces very striking Gold blooms. Flowers well mid-season.

Glenmarc Endeavour

If you want a striking Yellow with good form this is the one. Plant habit is very upright producing good flowers on good stems. Tubers are large & should be sold by the Kilo.

Glenmarc Kadina

An Apricot/Pink Blend on a tall plant. Stands out in the garden.

Hamari Gold

This low plant produces quality Gold blooms. Received the best over 160mm at the 2014 Victoria Dahlia Society show against quality blooms.

Regina

Records show Regina was Best in Show in 1948. The Purple/Red blooms are still receiving awards to this day. Plant is approx. 1.2 Mt. high and is best mid-season. Best Bloom over 160mm at the Victorian State Championships -Exhibited by Rick Burns.

Winkie Colonel

The “Winkie Flagship” was raised in 1988. This giant has won us and many others numerous awards nationally. Quality blooms are produced for the full season.

Winkie Whopper

A great surprise performer this season. Previously this cultivar did not rate very high on the list with me, BUT this season it produced some of the best Giant Blooms for the season. Next season may be different

Zorro

A very easy cultivar to grow. Stems are excellent. "Zorro" is exceptionally good for the early season shows. Grows very easy to size.

Alden Rocket

Another that has stood the test of time raised by Frank Rossack in the 70’s. The Autumn blooms grow well above the quite tall plant.

Como Polly

Very easy to grow to size & appears to do well in the Winkie heat. We have to keep up the Potash sprays to maintain a strong stem. The Lavender blooms are appealing. Limited Stock.

Devon Alaska

From Charlie Smith several years ago. It performed well in the Winkie Conditions but not so well in Tasmania in its third year.

Having had five years in Winkie it is still performing especially early in the season.

Winkie Admiral

Blood Red blooms on a strong plant. Wins in the Eastern States but finds it challenging in Winkie.

Alloway Cottage

Blooms are of a pleasing Creamy Autumn Blend. Depth of the bloom could be a little more.

Argyle Ray

A good performer on the Show bench. Frequency of blooms can be a bit slow. Purple.

Barbarry Summit

Purple. Has a good show history, always in demand.

Birchip

The clear yellow florets are tipped white. The level of tipping varies through the season.

Bracken Fanfare

A tall plant supporting good sized blooms of Autumn/Pink blend on excellent stems.

Bracken Sarah

One of the most consistent winners on the bench in all states. The Autumn blend can vary a little in colour depending on your location. Very reliable.

Brian R

This Purple was selected as Flower of the Year for NSW in 2014.

Easy to grow with plenty of blooms. Does not like the harsh Winkie weather but does well in the coastal areas.

Devon Ultimate

Dark Lavender with whitish edges. The white becomes very prominent as the weather gets warmer.

Formby Duke

Unusual Smokey Pink coloured blooms on a sturdy plant.

Grows easily to size.

Formby Supreme

One for the exhibitor, very easy to get to size on excellent stems. This is a good Yellow.

Hillview Iceberg

One of our reliable favourites. The White blooms start early in the season held aloft on great stems. Winner of many awards. One of the easiest mediums to Grow.

Kenora Firefighter

Recently from the USA this Bright Red does not fade as much as others in the severe heat. The more you disbud the better the stems.

Snowwhite

Low plant with good stems. The quality White blooms are a stand out. Performs well all season.

Sylvia Craig Hunter

A very tall plant with heaps of unusual Burnt Orange flowers. The more you cut the more you get. Great for the exhibitor.

Winkie Anne

Named in the late 80's after Anne. White with a Cerise overlay. Winner of many awards. Does not like continued periods of rain, prefers the warmer conditions.

Winkie Cockerel

Medium. Cockerel is about eight years old. It was growing behind the "Chook-yard" in an old seedling patch. None of them looked too good so I dug them all out. This one must have been left & it continued to grow without water etc. for about six years. Then it was given to a friend. It grew very well in his yard so I had to get a bit back. It appears it will be a good addition to the Medium Class.

Winkie Helios

This Yellow/Gold demands attention from several metres away. Tall plant, good stems, yet to prove itself. Promising. Provides a focus point in the Garden - Plant it olong the Front Fence.

Winkie Rhubarb

The colour is interesting giving the impression of a bowl of Rhubarb & Custard. That is how it was described in the seedling patch, the name stuck. The blooms are held on excellent stems and are produced for the whole season.

Winkie Wanderer

Notes from the Canberra Trial Garden.

Medium /Large Decorative in Lilac Mauve colour. This cultivar was very rewarding from early season until we cut the last flower the day we lifted tubers. Never without flowers of good form on strong stems, if anything was too prolific and would most likely be even better with more control of laterals. No wonder this was top flower in the trials this year.

Bracken Palomino

A pleasing Milky Apricot Gold that attracts all comers. Blooms till very late in the season. Great form.

Devon Dazzler

The split florets gives this one an appeal complimented with the frosted whitish edge makes it an interesting on to have in the garden. Won the Peoples Choice at the 2015 Portland Show. Plant habit is tall with brilliant stems. Recurrent Bloomer.

Devon Mystique

The Lavender blooms are all winners. One of the best performers all season in the Winkie Garden. Champion Small Decorative & Vase of the Show at the SA Championships.

Devon Rubi

The brightest Vermillion Red one can expect on a Dahlia. Low plant but continually produces quality blooms

Down's Hazel

Raised by Ray Grant in the late 90’s. Form is excellent and the stems hold the Dark Red blooms brilliantly.

Kiara Dark Night

As the name suggests, very Dark Maroon blooms on a very tall plant.

Kiara Pompadour

This has been around for years & is still in the serious exhibitor’s collection. Reliable in all regions & conditions.

Le Batts Prime

A reliable English introduction from the 80’s. This Mauve over White is very appealing attracting a lot of comments. Still doing well on the show bench.

Leslie Freda

Pink blooms provide a good show. Blooms tend to be a little shallow.

Matthew Lea

White with an overlay of Lavender creating a misty effect. Stems are great making it a very easy cultivar to stage.

Nationwide

This came from England in the 80's. The lovely blooms have a blend of Autumn edged with a nice pink. Stems are good and long. A great addition to any garden.

Ryecroft Brenda 'T'

“Brenda” just does not like the heat in Winkie but does very well in the coastal regions. White flushed with Lavender. Very hard to keep a centre.

Shirley Francis

A Winkie origination named after Rodney Clarkes wife Shirley. White with a prominant Cerise centre as it opens.

Sophie Heinrich

A very Dark Red on a tall plant. Florets are quite involute but attractive. Stems are brillaint making it a pleasure to pick for bouquet.

Winkie Antarctica

Trial Ground Report - Runner-up in the 2014 Trial Grounds.

Is the starkest white that stands out even among white flowers. Plants were a little slow to make growth early but soon developed a pleasing bush. Form is very consistent being almost formal except for a sharp point on the end of each petal, stems were outstanding and this plant attracted much interest from visitors to the garden. One of this year’s more consistent plants.

Winkie Campfire

As the name suggests a number of colours in the Yellow, Orange, Pink and Autumn shades are similar to the dancing colours of the "Campfire Coals".

Winkie Chevron

Purist Pink blooms on a very sturdy plant with great stems. Plant can grow quite wide giving lots of blooms.

Winkie Director

Darkest Red blooms on a dark stem give a very striking effect in the garden. The quality blooms are displayed on excellent stems. Featured in the winning Championship at the Victorian State Championships. I rated this cultivar as close to the best performing cultivar for the whole season.

Winkie Nugget

Has been in several award winning entries in its short history. The prolific Gold blooms come early and continue all season. Stems are a dream.

Winkie Pat

Has won a lot of awards in its short career. The Cerise over White blooms are displayed on a strong plant. Stems can be a little heavy if over fertilized. Grow with plenty of laterals. Grand Champion at the Enfiled Show (at the end of the season) Champion Small Decorative at Victorian State Show (Beginning of Season)

Winkie Wisteria

One of our best Small Decoratives. The Lavender blooms are of excellent form & several have grown easily to medium. A treat to grow.

Grand Champion at the Kadina Show & featured in other winning Championsips.

An excellent performer over the season. Won numerous Grand Champions in Qld  northern NSW. This picture was taken in the Winkie garden mid March during a heat spell.

Bracken Joan

Lavender blooms of class. Grand Champions at the 2014 Queensland State Show. Form is exquisite. Plant habit is ideal.

Bracken Nikolaus

One of the most reliable cultivars in the garden. Won best vase in Show in Melbourne two years in a row. The Purple blooms are there all season. One of the Best.

Brooks Josh

Pink. Bright & happy prolific flowerer on a good plant. The excellent stems are ideal for any arrangement.

Bushfire

This one is a conversation piece in your garden. The Yellow base is splashed & striped with Red.

Formby Art

The White heavily tipped Cerise blooms are most attractive. A good one for the exhibitor. Stems are brilliant.

Formby Pearl

The tall plant displays pleasing blooms of White/Lavender. Stems are good.

Juliette

An attractive Pink/Cerise with a Cream base makes this an ideal cultivar for picking.

Lucia Clara

The Lemon florets have a very fine Gold tip creating a nice effect.

Flowers well later in the season due to it not liking the Winkie heat.

Painted Lady

An older introduction from the "Formby Stable" of White flushed Pink. A great Dahlia for all purposes. Stems are good on a taller plant.

Tegan Anne

Miniature. A very Dark Red stems on a tall plant. The bright Red blooms will be handy for both the exhibitor & for bouquets.

Winkie Athena

A Soft Pink with a blend of White, most appealing in an arrangement. Just a bit shallow for a top exhibition bloom, but does have sufficient depth. Stems are long.

Winkie Cavalier

Miniature. Expect this one to feature in a number of championship entries in the coming years. Bright Pink blooms that have a very fine White tip on the end of each floret. "Cavalier" was in the SA Championship entry this last season. Performed very well mid-season onwards. The plants will grow very wide if not pruned.

Winkie Kestrel

One of my favourites right from when selected in the seedling patch in 2010. The plant is strong producing quality deep Gold blooms on good stems.          Performed well in the 2013 Trial Grounds.

Winkie Pat

Has won a lot of awards in its short career. The Cerise over White blooms are displayed on a strong plant. Stems can be a little heavy if over fertilized. Grow with plenty of laterals. Winkie Raven

As “Raven” opens it is the Darkest Maroon appearing almost black from a distance. The stems are excellent & plant height is approx. 2 Mt. Blooms early & continues all season.

Winkie Serenity

The bright Lemon blooms are very attractive on thin strong stems. A good back-up cultivar for the exhibitor & good one for a show in the garden.

Winkie Tuscany

If this one has a problem it is plant height, it can get to three metres if not pruned. The Gold blooms have good form on brilliant stems.

Winkie Watermelon

One of the most appealing blends of Pink/Yellow/Cream in the garden. Stems are brillaint on a strong plant. Stages exceptionally easily because the stems are so straight. Performed exceptionally well late in the season.

Devon Carnival

One of the easiest cultivars to grow to get big blooms. The Salmon/Cream/Lemon blend makes this true semi a delight to grow.

Winkie Bombardier

A good Red Giant. Easy to grow provided you maintain your Potash levels to assist the stem. Does not fade in the heat. Disbud Early for best results.

Winkie Wyoming

Trial Ground Notes:-

In slightly Pink Red. Boy if you want a big flower I believe this could be the one. Very short plant with big foliage. Struck from a cutting very easily and still produced short plant. Early flowers were very revolute for almost their entire petal length without being completely revolute and were rather ugly. Late flowers were much better.

Aitara Majesty

A clear Yellow and easy to grow to size. Handy in a competitive class.

Formby Elite

One of the better new introductions of late. The Salmon/Pink blooms are easily grown to size. Winner of at least four Grand Champions around the states.

Kiara Julia

“Julia” continues to hold its own against all challengers. This Autumn/Gold/Pink is very easy to grow with good results.

Narrows Tricia

The Lemon/Yellow blooms are of true Semi-Cactus form making it hard to beat on its day in an extremely competitive class.

Trooper Dan

A bright clear Yellow that stands out in the garden without too much effort. For even better results prune to a side bud.

Winkie Carnival

White with Cerise tips makes this a most attractive cultivar in the garden. The form is good and is continually in demand. A real conversation plant for the Garden.

Formby Karon

This Pink Semi-cactus grows brilliantly in some areas. In the heat it comes with a good number of “Pin-Petals.”

Glenmarc Mystery

A bright Pink with good form is well worth a try. It has a preference for coastal areas. Did not like the over 42C temperatures.

Hamari Accord

Raised by Pi Ensum in 1986 is now recognized as the best all round cultivar internationally. The Yellow blooms have won more awards than most.

Light Accord

One of the most exciting Cultivars to grow. It handles the heat well. Been shown once & was Champion Medium Cactus early in the season. The second flush was alittle while incoming & was brilliant for the rest of the season

Scarborough 2000

A very bright Red that is easy to grow to size. Some blooms are a challenge to get to the required angle.

Silver Gay

Gayner Parker’s 1984 introduction is still keeping up with the best. The White has a real sheen on the florets making it even more attractive. Stems are good.

Wakefield Anniversary

A most attractive delicate Pink & White making it a must in any garden. Winner of many awards in its short history.

Winkie Mark

This plant has very dark stems adding to its appeal with well-formed Autumn blooms.

Devon Caress

The Purple blooms stand out in the garden & are very competitive on the Show Bench. Performed well in the 2015 season featuring in our entries at most shows.

Devon Elegance

One of the best in its class. The Pink/White blooms are well formed on good stems. Only one problem it is one of the harder cultivars to keep over winter, it has to be dug & stored early.

Devon Odessey

Bronze with splashes & stripes of mahogany making it a standout for visitors to the Garden. Plant is near 2 Mt. with good strong stems.

Embrace

One of Australia’s most successfully raised cultivar winning in all states and especially in NZ & the USA. The Apricot/Salmon is very easy to grow.

Gay Twinkle

The long stems support well-formed blooms of White/Lavender. A most attractive cultivar that performs very well on the Show Bench. Stock Limited because the tubers are very hard to keep. Keep the eyes open for 2016.

Gladys Johns

One of our best small Cactus at Winkie. The Purple is very easy to grow and stage. “Gladys” has won a lot of awards for us.

Karras 150

A very reliable White cactus in a very competitive Class.

Winkie Abha

A bright Yellow with a brilliant centre. Recurrence of blooming is a problem for the exhibitor. Form is very good. Been around since the late 80's & still performing

Winkie Crystobelle

An exciting one to grow. Plenty of blooms with great stems. The clear White will be a great competitor in the future. Plenty of blooms to choose from all season

Winkie Lisbon

If this Yellow has a problem it is it produces far too many laterals giving a massed display. If exhibiting de-branch severely for best results. When Double Stpped "Lisbon" comes down to a good Miniature.

Glenbank Twinkle

White with Cerise tips makes this cultivar very popular. Low Grower.

Glenmarc Envy

An easy to grow Miniature. Advised to double stop the plant to keep it down to Miniature. Stages well as both Miniature & Small. The Stems are good and the plant habit is just as good. A good introduction from Alf Hargingham in Portland (Aus).

Kiara Forgwen

The Pink/White well-formed blooms are amongst the best.

Kismet

This free flowering cultivar has nice dark stems complimenting the pink blooms. Stems are brilliant and is certainly one for the serious exhibitor. Champion Miniature late in the season. Kismet produces a lot of seed if you are interested in developing new Cultivars.

Winkie Nickel

Won several Champions in 2015. The plant is very erect reaching over 2 Mt. producing excellent stems. Tends to loose floret count in the extreme hot periods we have at Winkie. The blooms are a treat to stage.

Nabiac Nitro

This fully reflexed Anemone is a striking Red with gold tipped tubes. Most unusual but attracts attention. Winner of the Peoples Choice section at Portland 2013. Now this one is Different, it cetainly creates conversation.

Winkie Daisy

This is one for those who like a basic flower, hence the name "Daisy". The stems are very good & the profusion of blooms all season make this a floral artists dream.

Winkie Lipstick

Champion Single at the Victorian State Show. Very challenging to keep stock. As the name suggests  the vibrant "Lipstick" coloured blooms stand out in the garden. Ideal to brighten up any corner. The stems are good and plant is strong. This one demands attention from any visitor. Looks good in an arrangement.

Woden Wonder Velvet

Maroon Red single blooms with an unusual centre. There is no particular class for this cultivar but it is very much a standout in the garden. Building stock

Granite Virginia

Miniature - Congratulations to Malcolm Balch for breeding this wonderful White Miniature. This one certainly has a future & will certainly chalenge Bracken Nikolaus for the Top of the Tree Status. Plant habit is ideal producing great stems. Performed all season

Lismore Moonlight

An extremely frustrating Cultivar to grow because of its keeping qualities. It is certainly worth the effort because it is most rewarding on the show bench. Building Stock for 2016

W. 203

Small. I suspect this will destinate as a great "Garden Flower". The floret count is a little on the lean side. Stems & plant habit are great. The pastel Pinkish Red over Yellow is alluring.

W. 266

Small. A very easy one to get to the small size. The brightest of Yellow blooms are on good stems. Going into its fourth year & I expect it will continue as stock builds

W. 27

Medium. Did very well in the 2013 Trial Garden, Runner-up. The stems are almost too long but they are srtong & straight. The extreme hot of 2014 affected the growth resulting in several lost plants. Building stock this year. Grown in more ideal conditions it will be very competitive.

W. 305

Fimbriated. This pleasing Pink/White has briliant stems on an easy to grow plant. My concerne is the centre that breaks away too quickly leaving a small "Race-Track". Its third year will be the test. If nothing else it will be an appealing cultivar in the garden.

W. 319

Ball. Promising to be a great addition to the class. The good long stems on the tall plant are an assestt. The colour and form are tops. Expect to see this one on the Bench this coming season. I rate this as one of our better new-ones in the Pipeline. It is going into its third year.

W. 329

Medium. One of our most exciting seedlings for many years. Grows very easy to medium & the colour is more than appealing. Plants are excellent and very easy to control. Grows ten up without any problems. Florets are nice & straight complimented with a good centre.

W. 347

Small. The slightly incurved florets concern me a little. (That is my prefernce) Colour is great, stems are good & it is likely to be a brilliant cultivar for picking. Did not fade in the heat.

W. 401

Medium. If you are seeking needle straight florets this is the one. Going into its second year will test the floret count. It grew well in the hot conditions last season. Stems are brilliant. It is one to watch its progress.

W. 413

Medium. A clear Red medium. Stems are OK on an average sized Plant. Florets are straight and the colour did fade fractionally in last seasons challenging Winkie HEAT. 

W. 67

Ball. This has a problem with the florets being too involute. Creating a "Gappy/Loose" appearance which is not my ideal for a Ball Type. The colour of very dark Purple/Red is extremely dark making it a conversation piece in the garden. The stems are next to brilliant. 

W. 82

Ball. The Cerise over White is attractive. The centre is not as high as I would like but acceptable. Plant habit is good producing good stems.

Waterlily WL 1-

Waterlily. This is extremely showy in the garden. Grows on an excellent plant with good stems. Building Stock - Performed well in the heat of the season. Watch this on the bench in 2016.

Winkie Bacchus

Orchid. Of excellent form, Stems are just the "Ants Pants" and a delight to stage. The Red/White Florets are complimented with a bright Yellow base. Expect to see this one in championship entries this coming season. Building Stock

Winkie Maverick

This one has taken three years to show it true form demonstrating seedling must be given time to settle down. Last year in its fourth it showed it will be grown in numbers this coming season. Stems are more than ideal & performed all season. A striking yellow.

Aitara Bronwyn

This tall growing cultivar has excellent stems supporting the lovely Salmon/Pink blooms.

Alessia

White with dominant cerise tips. Winner of many awards & extremely popular with garden visitors.

Downs Red

A great reliable Red Fimbriated with a sturdy strong plant.

One of the Parents of "Winkie Volcano".

Glenmarc Philly Liz

The Pink/White blooms are appealing complimented with excellent form. The plant habit is good.

Higgo Lacey

One of the proven performers over the last twenty years. The Cream blooms have that lovely Fluffy appearance. Building up the Good Stock. Next season OK.

Jennie

One of the exhibitors favourite cultivars. The Lavender/Pink blooms sit nicely at the correct angle on good stems. It was pleasing to see it Grand Champion at the SA State Show. Building Stock

Joy's Moonglow

Another tall grower with Salmon/Autumn blooms on strong stems. An ideal seed parent. Tuber keeping qualities are good.

Judith Taylor

Pink/Cream/Yellow Flushed blooms of great form. This was one of our earlier Winkie raisings that appeared in 1995. Winner of many awards and still performing.

Winkie Volcano

This Red created a lot of interest in the seedling patch. The first time exhibited it won its class at the 2014 Victoria State Show with an Award of Merit. Form is good, stems excellent and produces quality blooms all season. This last season it won the Fimbriated Championship at the Victorian Stae show and Champion Fimbriated at many other shows of the the whole of season.

A proven performer over the years. At times the nice Pink blooms need extra support to prevent the blooms from facing downwards.

Lovley Apricot/Gold blooms on long stems. A great stand-by for the exhibitor.

Winkie Paddlewheel

"Paddlewheel" was featured in our winning Melbourne Championship along with winning its section at four other shows during the season. Plant grows easily to two metres giving brilliant stems. The colur is a welcom change in this section.

Devon Alaska

From Charlie Smith several years ago. It performed well in the Winkie Conditions but not so well in Tasmania in its third year.

Having had five years in Winkie it is still performing especially early in the season.

Glenmarc Burns

Ball. Red/Orange of good form. A great colour break bred by Alf Hardingham in Portland. The good sized bush is complimented with strong stems.

Glenmarc Philly Liz

Fimbriated. The Pink/White blooms are appealing complimented with excellent form. The plant habit is good. Grows to Large easily. Did not like the very hot week in March. Great in Costal Regions.

Light Accord

One of the most exciting Cultivars to grow. It handles the heat well. Been shown once & was Champion Medium Cactus early in the season. The second flush was alittle while incoming & was brilliant for the rest of the season

Tegan Anne

Miniature. The Dark Stems hold the Blood Red Bloom well above the bush. Another Winkie raised cultivar that was named for charity. The bright Red blooms will be handy for both the exhibitor & for bouquets.

Wakefield Samba

Waterlily. A vibrant Red with a bright Yellow base. Performed well in the Trial Garden. Stems are excellent. Did fade a little with temperatures over 45C.

Winkie Antarctica

Trial Ground Report - Runner-up in the 2014 Trial Grounds.

This Small is the starkest white that stands out even among white flowers. Plants were a little slow to make growth early but soon developed a pleasing bush. Form is very consistent being almost formal except for a sharp point on the end of each petal, stems were outstanding and this plant attracted much interest from visitors to the garden. One of this year’s more consistent plants.

Winkie Arrow

Ball. A little slow to bloom but comes into its own from Mid-Season until late. The Red blooms have a good high centre on good stems.

Winkie Athena

Miniature. A Soft Pink with a blend of White, most appealing in an arrangement. Just a bit shallow for a top exhibition bloom, but does have sufficient depth. Stems are long. 

Winkie Barney

Waterlily. Autumn Peach blooms with good cupped florets. The thin stems are very Dark & very strong. The blooms stood the summer heat well. Named after a good friends old faithful Dog "Barney".

Winkie Cavalier

Miniature. Expect this one to feature in a number of championship entries in the coming years. Bright Pink blooms that have a very fine White tip on the end of each floret. "Cavalier" was in the SA Championship (Purple Dec on RHS) entry this last season. Performed very well mid-season onwards. The plants will grow very wide if not pruned.

Winkie Chevron

Small. Purist Pink blooms on a very sturdy plant with great stems. Plant can grow quite wide giving lots of blooms.

Winkie Crystobelle

Small. An exciting one to grow. Plenty of blooms with great stems. The clear White will be a great competitor in the future.

Winkie Director

Darkest Red blooms on a dark stem give a very striking effect in the garden. The quality blooms are displayed on excellent stems. Featured in the winning Championship at the Victorian State Championships. I rated this cultivar as close to the best performing cultivar for the whole season.

Winkie Gladiator

Ball. Maroon with a White reverse is more than attractive. Form is excellent and the stems are an exhibitor’s delight. Performed well all season.

Winkie Graham

This vibrant Purple is good addition to the class. Champion Small Decorative at the SA State Show. Plant habit is idela producing ecellent stems on tall erect plant.

Winkie Ingot

Ball. This one has been rated by several as a good Gold Ball. The vibrant colour makes this stand out in the garden. The stems are adequate, ideally they could be a fraction longer.

Winkie Kestrel

Miniature. One of my favourites right from when selected in the seedling patch in 2010. The plant is strong producing quality deep Gold blooms on good stems. Performed well in the 2013 Trial Grounds.

Miniature. Plant is great with excellent stems. Going into its fourth year will be the test. Performed extremely well this last season, featuring in several Winkie exhibits.

Winkie Lambrusco

Winner of two major Seedling awards in the UK at the Harrogate Show in 2014. The plants grows easily to 2 Mt. with excellent stems. Adviseable to double stop early to keep bloom size down to 50 mm. Colour & form outstanding. Does not perform well during the hot weather.

Winkie Lisbon

Small. If this Yellow has a problem it is it produces far too many laterals giving a massed display. If exhibiting de-branch severely for best results. When Double Stopped "Lisbon" comes down to a good Miniature.

Winkie Moorpark

"Moorpark" was in our entry that won the SA Championship. It was third in the Dahlia Society Australia Trial Grounds. The excellent Dark Stems add to the appeal of the bloom. The blooms maintained size all season.

Winkie Nickel

Won several Champions in 2015. The plant is very erect reaching over 2 Mt. producing excellent stems. Tends to loose floret count in the extreme hot periods we have at Winkie. The blooms are a treat to stage.

Winkie Nugget

Small. Has been in several award winning entries in its short history. The prolific Gold blooms come early and continue all season. Stems are a dream. Winner of many awards this last season Grand Champion at Urailda Show - In the winning Championship at the Victorian State Show.

Winkie Pat

Has won a lot of awards in its short career. The Cerise over White blooms are displayed on a strong plant. Stems can be a little heavy if over fertilized. Grow with plenty of laterals. Grand Champion at the Enfiled Show (at the end of the season) Champion Small Decorative at Victorian State Show (Beginning of Season)

Winkie Raven

Miniature. As “Raven” opens it is the Darkest Maroon appearing almost black from a distance. The stems are excellent & plant height is approx. 2 Mt. Blooms early & continues all season.

Winkie Rhubarb

Medium The colour is interesting giving the impression of a bowl of Rhubarb & Custard. That is how it was described in the seedling patch, the name stuck. The blooms are held on excellent stems and are produced for the whole season. Some Judges are not in favour with the colour.

Winkie Robot

Ball. Watermelon Pink/Red blooms are very close to the ideal Ball. Stems are very good. The florets breaking away from the centre form an excellent high centre. This is the best formed Ball Type in the Winkie Garden.

Winkie Rosella

Ball. Red/Yellow/Cream blooms with florets that may be too involute forming tubes, resulting in a gappy appearance. The centre is high; stems are great and will always feature in our breeding program.

Winkie Test Eagle

Scored very well in the Trial Grounds. The plant grows over 2 Mt providing excellent Stems. Form is Good & was in most Ball entries throughout the season. It had one small problem "Winkie Ingot" was just that little better.

Winkie Tuscany

Miniature. If this one has a problem it is plant height, it can get to three metres if not pruned. The Gold blooms have good form on brilliant stems.

Notes from the 2014 Canberra Trial Garden.

Medium /Large Decorative in Lilac Mauve colour. This cultivar was very rewarding from early season until we cut the last flower the day we lifted tubers. Never without flowers of good form on strong stems, if anything was too prolific and would most likely be even better with more control of laterals. No wonder this was top flower in the trials this year.

Winkie Wyoming

Trial Ground Notes:- Giant

In slightly Pink Red. Boy if you want a big flower I believe this could be the one. Very short plant with big foliage. Struck from a cutting very easily and still produced short plant. Early flowers were very revolute for almost their entire petal length without being completely revolute and were rather ugly. Late flowers were much better.

Glenbank Honeycomb

A rewarding cultivar to grow, producing quality blooms all season. One of our most successful Pompons.

Lismore Peggy

A blend of Pink/White giving a dusky affect. The long stems are held on a strong plant.

Margaret John

Apricot/Gold blooms are a profusion later in the season. Great cultivar for the later shows. This is one Pompon that does have a good amount of seed compared to the others.

Miwong

I rate this as the best Pompon in the garden. It has won many awards for the "Winkie Stable". Stock is hard to keep for some.

Stoneleigh Joyce

Comes early with a hard centre but soon settles down on the second flush. The bright Vermilion Red blooms certainly stand out in the garden.

Woden Surprise

These bright Cerise blooms are displayed on excellent stems. A good cultivar for the Exhibitor.

Cornel

This Red has been proven Internationally, a good Ball. Floret count can be affected by the heat in Winkie. Generally a good performer & a standout in the garden.

Devon Holly

A good reliable back-up cultivar for the exhibitor. The Red blooms are supported on good stems.

Devon Safari

I have rated “Safari” as the yard-stick for Ball Types. The stems are good and the blooms are ever reliable. It is also a great seed parent for the breeder.

Glenmarc Burns

Red/Orange of good form. A great colour break bred by Alf Hardingham in Portland. The good sized bush is complimented with strong stems.

Glenmarc Rosalie

The Lavender/white blooms are very attractive and always attract attention. Stems are an asset.

Ivanetti

Maroon, The well-formed blooms have good stems. A Stayer.

Le 'Ancresse

One of the golden oldies that is performing against all comers. The White blooms can have a Lavender flush when grown in the cooler coastal conditions.Previous Stock thrown out - Building up new Stock.

Ryecroft Laura

One of the best all season performers in the Winkie garden. The Yellow blooms are on excellent stems. A great colour break.
